About Sussex

School History

Sussex Avenue School was built in 1954. The land where the school stands was once the estate of Silas Condict, who helped to author the state's first constitution and attended the Continental Congress.

The huge copper beach tree in front of the school is all that remains of a grand estate owned by H. Elmer Gibbs. The tree is about 95 years old. Students have developed a self-guided tree trail to the many interesting trees on the grounds.

Today

Sussex Avenue School is one of three, 3rd through 5th grade elementary schools in the Morris School District. As of June 30, 2009 Sussex has 314 student enrollment and an average class size of 18.2 students per classroom.

Sussex's Mission statement: The mission of the Sussex Avenue School community is to provide a positive, motivating school environment in which student achievement and respect for others are priorities.

School hours are from 9:10am to 3: 20pm. On days with early dismissal, students are dismissed at 1:30pm.

In addition, Morris School District operates a Community School which houses the Sunrise and Sunset Program in each elementary school.
Sunrise and Sunset offers a safe, supportive and supervised environment in which boys and girls can work and play before and after school.
