School History
Sussex Avenue School was built in 1954. The land where the school stands was once the estate of Silas Condict, who helped to author the state's first constitution and attended the Continental Congress.
The huge copper beach tree in front of the school is all that remains of a grand estate owned by H. Elmer Gibbs. The tree is about 95 years old. Students have developed a self-guided tree trail to the many interesting trees on the grounds.
